Why people go to nightclubs...Posted by: Dan Suzor on Oct 10, 2008 |

I was talking to someone in the nightclub "industry" a couple months ago, a club manager actually, about various things related to nightlife when he asked me "What is the main reason that people go to nightclubs?". Hmmm - I had honestly never really thought about that before. The answer is fairly obvious now, but I wasn't able to come up with the right one until he told me. Some might say that most of the individuals "out on the town" are singles out looking for love (for at least one evening), but I don't think this is the case.
So, why is it that people spend their hard-earned money (and not so hard-earned money) on overpriced drinks and relatively poor entertainment, often on a weekly basis or more? I think the individual I was speaking with was right on when he said most people go to nightclubs because they want to feel like "rockstars". This makes a lot of sense actually. Of course their are exceptions - some just want to go out and dance, have a drink, forget about work, meet with some friends, listen to their favorite DJ or music, etc, etc, etc - but only one reason explains the behavior exhibited by most people I have come across at all the "big ones", including Lush, Home, Dolce' (thank god this one closed down), Lucky's, Lure, F15teen, Xes, blah, blah, blah...
Next time you are out and about at one of the "big ones", take a look around and pay attention to who is around (maybe take a quick look at yourself while you are at it). What do you see? My guess is you will find a club packed full of people that are trying WAY TO HARD. To your right, you have 6 guys sitting in a booth, all wearing Affliction t-shirts, sipping on a bottle of Three Olives Grape, and putting more effort into looking "better than you", than all of the effort combined from their 6 years of high school. To your left, you have a group of girls wearing those tube-looking dress things that look like they are straight from the 80's; I don't get it... I think this wannabe "rockstar" mentality explains why so many Saint Louis clubs are adopting bottle service and VIP booths in the recent years - people feel cooler when they have a whole bottle sitting at their table and a server to wait on them! I can't be a total hipocrit though, I have had a bottle or two myself, it's kinda fun... It's also nice to have a place to sit when you have a group...
I think ya get the idea. It's not fair to say that everyone fits in this category, as I have met some cool people over time, and I am sure many do go out just to have a genuine good time. But seriously guys, quit trying so hard - nobody cares really. I enjoy going to dance clubs myself here and there, however, since I realized what is going on around me and why, I remind myself not to act as described above - and don't worry, I don't have any Affliction shirts either, nor do my friends :) What do ya think, have you ever noticed any of this? Feel free to let me know if you think I am COMPLETELY wrong, or mostly right...

...at least in London. The big spenders tend to work high pressure jobs and when the weekend comes it's time to let loose! (you could say like a rockstar)...
I would say another thing, different clubs have different types of people so the motive is different, here check out what I mean here:
